How we test cinema gear
No sponsored placements. No brand-supplied bodies we keep. Just a documented, repeatable process.
We buy our own bodies and glass
Every camera and lens is purchased at full US retail, so what we test is exactly what ships to you.
Measured, not vibes
Dynamic range, rolling shutter, breathing and distortion are measured against a reference chart, not judged by eye alone.
Real shoots, not test clips
Average test period is seven weeks, including at least two paid projects and a full post-production pass on the footage.
Commissions don't rank
Affiliate rates are never part of scoring. Some winning gear pays us nothing at all.
Retested after firmware
Manufacturers ship fixes. When a camera changes materially, we retest and republish the score.
Corrections in public
Found an error? Tell us and we fix it at the top of the page with a dated note. No quiet edits.

Should I rent or buy a cinema camera?
If you shoot fewer than 20 days a year, renting almost always costs less once you add insurance, storage and depreciation. Buy when the body earns its keep on two or more jobs a month.
Which lens mount should I start with?
EF and Sony E are the cheapest ways in. PL mount is the professional standard and adapts to most mirrorless bodies with a mount adapter, so PL glass holds its value longest.
Do you accept free gear from brands?
We buy our own bodies and lenses whenever possible. When a loaner is unavoidable, the review states it plainly at the top and the gear is returned afterwards.
